If you need some new holiday decor for your front porch this year, this DIY reversible front porch sign is the perfect addition! It’s a quick and easy project that you can make in a day for your front porch or patio. You can customize it however you want, which makes this a really versatile project that can fit any decor.
I kept my porch sign a little more on the minimal and modern side, but you could easily make it into a more rustic decor piece, or you could make it fit with your farmhouse decor or traditional home. There aren’t any limits to how much fun you can have with this project, so get creative with it!
DIY REVERSIBLE Fall & Christmas Porch Sign
You’ll need…
- 6-foot 1×12 piece of pine.
- (2) 8-foot 1×3 pieces of pine
- Paint and/or stain
- (2) 8″ or 10″ embroidery hoops
- Faux fall and Christmas stems
- Hot glue
- Wood glue
Step One: Paint or stain the sign
First up, you’ll want to paint or stain both sides of your wood sign. You might notice that I’m using a 1×10 board and not a 1×12 – I regretted that decision because it feels a little skinny, so I’d recommend getting the wider board!
I chose to paint one side of my porch sign white and the other black. You could also stain them, paint both sides the same color, or do anything else you want. Remember, the sky’s the limit here, friends.
Be sure to allow the paint to dry fully on one side before flipping it over to the other side. I just used some leftover exterior paint for this, but if it will be under a covered porch you could probably get away with using interior paint as well!
Step Two: Add your message!
Once both sides of the sign have fully dried, you’re ready to add your message. Choose one “fall” message and one “Christmas message. Here are a few ideas:

Of course, there are a zillion other things you could add, but those are just some thoughts to get you started! However, keep in mind that if you want to add wreaths to your sign like I did, you’ll want to make sure to choose a sentiment that has an “O” in it!
You have a few different options when it comes to getting the message onto your sign. If you’re good at free-handing, you can just write the message on your sign with pencil before tracing over it with your paint.
One of my favorite methods is to use a pencil transfer technique – it requires almost no materials and is really quick and easy! This time around, though, I decided to try making own stencils with a Cricut. I just typed out my message in Cricut’s Design Space software, but you could also use a Silhouette machine! It worked really well, but I did need to do a few touch ups after pulling up the vinyl.
A few things to keep in mind when you’re adding the letters to your sign:
- Be sure to play around with placement before you start painting. Use a tape measure and get everything aligned before you begin!
- Make sure you center the letters on the board.
- Take your time! No one wants to go back and have to touch up every single letter because you rushed the job.
- If you’re adding a wreath, don’t paint an O! Just leave. the spot blank.
- Using a stencil brush or a sponge to paint the letters on is a great way to reduce bleed through. If you get any paint on the sign where you don’t want it, just wipe up the excess with a paper towel and then paint the base color over it when it dries.
Step Three: Make wreaths + add to sign
Once the paint from your lettering is dry, you’re ready to add some wreaths to your sign.
You can purchase pre-made mini wreaths, but it can be tricky to find wreaths small enough to fit on the sign that are actually cute. So, I decided to make my own!
I started with a simple embroidery hoop that I stained to make it a bit darker. Then, I just cut off some pieces from fall and Christmas faux stems and hot glued them onto each embroidery hoop to make a mini wreath.
This is obviously another area where you can get really creative! You can add more greenery, you can add bows, pinecones, or other adornments. It’s a really fun way to add some texture to the sign!
After making the wreaths, just glue them onto the sign in the spot where the “O” belongs!
If you want to add any other details to your sign, now is the time! You can paint on an ornament, some snowflakes, a snowman, fall leaves, or whatever you’d like!
Step Four: Add frame
Finally, you’re ready to add a frame to your fall and Christmas sign!
I chose to use 1×3 pine for the sign, and install it with the longer side facing the sign so that it adds some dimension to the sign. To do this, I cut the edges at a 45-degree angle, then I used wood glue and pin nails to attach it to the sides of the sign.
Before adding the wood, I stained it using my favorite stain, and it contrasts really nicely with the colors of the sign!
And that’s it!
Now you’re ready to style your cute sign on your porch with the Christmas or fall side showing and let all of your guests marvel at how creative you are.
